GBPUSD:

GBP/USD On Monday, the exchange rate remained stable within the recent consolidation, testing the level around 1.3550. Traders are preparing for a flurry of data from the UK and the US on Tuesday and Wednesday, while trade-related news continues to weigh on market sentiment, further dampening momentum as investors hope for a cooling of the latest broad tariff tensions between the US and China.

Trade talks between the Trump administration and the Chinese government are taking place in London this week. Investors are hoping that the US and China will find a compromise that will convince the Trump administration to stop holding its voters hostage economically with high import duties and restrictions on technology trade.

On Tuesday, midweek data will begin to be released, with updates on the labour market and earnings in the UK. Core average earnings growth is expected to slow to 5.4% for the quarter ending in April, and a jump in the number of jobless benefit claimants is also expected. The number of new jobless claims in May is expected to rise to 9,500.

On the US side, consumer price index (CPI) inflation will be released on Wednesday. Overall inflation in the US is expected to rise as inflation data following the introduction of tariffs trickles into the second quarter data set, which could create problems for investors hoping for a rate cut by the Federal Reserve (Fed) this year. Overall CPI inflation is expected to rise to 2.5% year-on-year in May.
